The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a military coup in last fall and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after recent developments emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.
